How to Play No Limit Texas Holdem

Game structure

  1. One player always acts as dealer. This position is referred to as the button and it rotates clockwise every hand.
  2. The two players to the left of the dealer are the small blind and the big blind, respectively. They are the only players who have to put money in the pot before the cards are dealt.
  3. Every player receives two cards face down. These are referred to as hole cards.
  4. The first betting round begins with the player sitting immediately to the left of the big blind, and continues clockwise.
  5. When the first betting round is completed, three community cards are flipped face up on the table. This is called the flop.
  6. The second round of betting begins with the first player still in the hand and seated to the left of the button. The betting again continues clockwise.
  7. When the second round of betting is finished, a fourth community card is flipped face up on the table. This card is called the turn or fourth street.
  8. The third round of betting begins with the first remaining player sitting to the left of the button. The betting moves clockwise.
  9. When the third round of betting is over, a fifth community card is flipped face up on the table. This card is called the river or fifth street.
  10. The fourth round of betting starts with the first remaining player seated to the left of the button. The betting continues to move clockwise.
  11. When the betting is finished and one player has been called that player flips is hole cards face up and the player with the best five-card poker hand wins the pot. If there is no calls the player who put the last bet or raise in the pot wins without having to show his/her hole cards.

Making out a hand

The players combine their hole cards with the community cards to make the best possible five-card poker hand. It is possible to use both of the hole cards, one hole card or no hole card (called play the board). Only five cards can be used in the making of a poker hand.

No Limit Structure

In No Limit a player can bet all his money or chips whenever it is their turn to act. This means that a player can bet anything between the size of the big blind (the minimum bet unless a player is forced to move all-in) and whatever he has in front of him.

A raise in No Limit must be at least the minimum of double the previous bet or raise. If the player does not have enough money to do that, he is forced to move all-in.
