A film about a true poker legend. Stu “The Kid” Ungar became famous for his ability to read his opponents at the card tables and broke several winning records in Las Vegas. But this is not mainly a film about poker. It’s rather the story of Stu Ungars both dramatic and tragic life. After his success as a celebrated champion in the early days in Vegas the problems started. Ungar couldn’t handle the high life, became addicted to drugs and sadly died at an early age. We get to follow “The Kid” from his childhood in a household dominated by a strong father figure, to his best times as a poker player and through his stormy marriage.
Although there are no big poker scenes the movie is always interesting and involving. It shows the viewers a man who simply couldn't resist the urge to play with destiny and make his own fate. Michael Imperioli, known from his role as Tony Sopranos nephew Christopher in “The Sopranos” does a great job as the main character.
