Matt Damon plays Mike McDermott, a man who has conquered his gambling addiction and now leads a quite life with his girlfriend (Gretchen Mol). But McDermott is drawn back in to the game by a friend (Lester 'Worm' Murphy, played by Edward Norton) that constantly gets himself into trouble. After being caught cheating in a game with Russian mafia man Teddy KGB, memorably played by John Malkovich, “The Worm” once again turns to McDermott. It all leads up to a final heads up game between McDermott and the mildly crazy Teddy KGB, where there’s more than money at stake.
The poker scenes in this movie well capture the drama and excitement of the game. The dangerous setting, with guns lying around and mobsters in every corner enhances the thrill. Recommended to every one that likes poker as well as a dramatic movie. The acting in the film is good in general, but as mentioned, John Malkovich stands out as Teddy KGB.
