There are many different poker variations available. By far the most popular is ring game Limit Texas Hold’em. Ring game means that is it any non tournament game. Also ring game Pot-Limit/No-Limit Hold’em and Omaha is very popular. Tournaments and satellites also exist in all kinds of different variations, where the most popular form is No-Limit Texas Hold’em. Satellites are tournaments where the prizes are entry-fees into bigger tournaments.
In tournaments all players buy-in for a certain amount plus a fee to the poker room. The money is put in a tournament prize pool and divided according to the pay-out structure, where first place pays most. This is a god way to practice poker as you are completely in control of your losses at all times. Online tournaments often have a high number of participants and for a small investment a player can win big. For example, Greg Raymer, the winner of the main event at the World Series of Poker in 2004 won $5,000,000 on a $10,000 investment (which he won by winning an online satellite). Although $10,000 is not a small investment, it is small compared to the winnings.
