In the early stages of a tournament you usually have a lot of chips as compared to the stakes. Therefore, you can afford to wait for good hands before getting heavily involved in a pot. It is recommended that you play patient, solid poker and try to trap weaker players with weaker hands. Don't risk any significant amount of chips with medium strong hands such as K J or 9 10, without having seen the flop. Play hands like that if you can get into pots cheap and preferably if there are many players in the pot. Play the premium hands like AA, KK, QQ or AK suited very aggressive, make sure to raise with hands like these. You don’t want medium hands to hit a flop when you have premium hands. That is a potential disaster waiting around the corner. There is no need to make any big gambles where you risk going broke. Hopefully you will get lucky and manage to accumulate chips so that you are able to continue playing in this manner. In the early stage a double or triple of the initial starting chips is a very good start in a tournament. That way you can be more selective in what kind of hands to play when the blinds increase.
